Are Contact Lenses Right for Me?

There is no one contact lens that is right for everyone. And not everyone is going to enjoy perfect vision with contact lenses. But if you are an appropriate candidate for contacts, you may enjoy several advantages over wearing glasses. The most obvious advantage of contact lenses is the ability to see without the weight of glasses on the nose and behind the ears. Cosmetically speaking, contact lenses allow a person to see clearly without altering their appearance. Some people with very strong prescriptions notice better peripheral vision and less distortion when wearing contact lenses. In addition, glasses tend to magnify or minify images, where contact lenses have less of a size altering effect. Active people sometimes find glasses a nuisance. Wearing contacts allows a person to be active without the worry of their glasses being steamed up, knocked off, or broken. On the other hand, contact lenses must be worn responsibly. Drs. Newman, Blackstock, & Associates do not recommend sleeping in contact lenses. Patients who sleep in their lenses are more likely to develop eye infections and ulcers of the cornea that may be sight threatening. If a patient insists on sleeping in contact lenses, you will be fit in the healthiest lenses approved by the FDA. We will continue to recommended lens removal at least 1x per week.

Lens Materials

The most basic component of any lens is the material from which it is made. The doctor/dispenser must first decide which lens material best serves the visual and cosmetic needs of the wearer. It's no longer a simple matter of choosing between glass or plastic. Drs. Newman, Blackstock, & Associates has a wide variety of ophthalmic materials from which to choose, including a number of materials that are relatively new. One of the major concerns facing eyecare professionals is keeping fully informed on all available materials. New sub-strates are introduced every year and, in most cases, each new material offers certain specific advantages for the wearer.

THE MAIN LENS OF YOUR EYE IS INSIDE THE EYE?     NOT QUITE.

Some textbooks assume that the small lens found deep within the eyeball is the eye's main lens, and the cornea of the eye is simplya protective window. The textbook diagrams even depict light rays passing into the eye and only bending as they pass through this internal lens. But in the human eye, the small lens found within the eyeball is not the main imaging lens.

The statistics are alarming, but the most disturbing fact about eye injuries is that 90% of reported eye injuries could have been prevented through the use of protective eyewear according to Prevent Blindness America. How often do you cut your grass in your best dress shoes? Probably never, but I would bet that you wear your dress eyewear when cutting the grass. Are your feet, or even worse your shoes, more important to protect than your eyesight? View safety eyewear for home and kids eye protection just like you would seatbelts for driving and helmets for riding a bicycle. Our society is gradually becoming more safety conscious and usage of these types of safety devices is more commonly accepted.

3-D Movies and your Eyes

3-D Movies require 3-D Vision: Traditional Theater 3-D Movies required two projectors to present the image that you view through the supplied frames. Today's newest technology presents the movie image from a single projector, which is believed to reduce eye fatigue and strain. To properly view a 3-D Movie, you need to have good quality vision in each eye. Some people are going to develop eye fatigue, headaches, or blurred vision after watching a 3-D movie. If you or a relative, especially a child, experiences any unusual symptoms following one of these movies, Please call to schedule an appointment. While a simple eyeglass correction might be enough, your problem could be more complicated. Small inconsistencies in how well your eyes team and work together might lead to your symptoms. Often these inconsistencies can be corrected with glasses or a regimented therapy program to improve your visual ability and perception.
